Bonkers (NY-58)

A bomb-proof organic apple tree. Fruit is large and highly misshapen -- Bonkers. You can come up with your own name because Cornell never officially released this variety, so it just goes by a number on the books. It's a great apple for the organic orchard: multi-use, highly forgiving, amazingly prolific. It is a cross of Red Delicious and Liberty.

Our Bonkers trees are on Geneva rootstock and will benefit from staking or trellising, especially given how prolific these trees are. We had a solid crop in year 2 when we first planted these, and have gotten loads of apples every year since. Ripens in very early October.
